How to Extend a Runway At the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, we’ve started construction on an extension to our main runway. We’re adding 1700 feet (1330’ at this end and 370’ at the other) so that 747 cargo planes have enough runway to accelerate to their takeoff speed when they’re loaded to maximum capacity. It’s not as simple as it sounds. The runway is 200 feet wide, the length of a hockey rink, with another 100 feet of flat ground on each side. Because the extension is going over ground that drops off as much as 25 feet from the level of the existing runway, we need lots of rock fill to bring up the grades. By “lots”, I mean that we estimate that 208,000 cubic meters of rock fill will be needed. To get a sense of how much rock that is, picture a box. If the bottom of the box is the size of a football field then the box would be as high as a 12 story building. The UBC Thunderbird Arena, a 2010 Olympic Games legacy building The Thunderbird Sports Centre features an International size rink and used for the men’s and women’s ice hockey matches both in the Olympics and sledge hockey for the Paralympics. It was a LEED Silver building for its efficient use of energy. Heat extracted from ice refrigeration is reused in heating the building and to provide hot water.The main arena can be booked for concerts, cabaret, film shoots and of course, men’s or women’s hockey games.
